The last line of defence for the St. Albert Steel will guard the net as their No. 1 starter for the second year in a row.

“After playing all those games last year, I’m more confident now. I know I can do it again,”  said goaltender Rhys Hadfield, who was between the pipes in 55 games for the fourth worst defensive team in the Alberta Junior Hockey League.

“The amount of starts I got and being over .500 is something I take pride in,” said Hadfield, who also set team records for games played, wins, losses, minutes played, priligyaustralia shots faced and saves. “Where I had lots of success was not giving up after the first shot or second shot. Lots of times, there were scrambles and stuff like that, so I think that was probably one of my strong suits last year.”

It was his first stint as the go to guy in net since his last year of midget AAA with the South Side Athletic Club.

“I viewed it as a bit of a learning experience. It was kind of my first real season as a starter in the league. It also helped me find out about nutrition and rest and how important that kind of stuff is involved with hockey,” Hadfield said.

Without a reliable backup to give him a breather, Hadfield was forced to play more minutes than expected, but he denied he ran out of steam as the season wound down.

“No, I don’t think I really ran into fatigue or anything like that. I’m in pretty good shape and I like seeing all the shots and playing all the games.”

Hadfield wants to finish his last year of junior with no regrets.

“I was really excited for my 20 year old year. Finally it’s here, so I’ve got to take it day by day and hopefully it doesn’t go by too fast,” he said. “I want to start quick and get on a roll and keep going. Team wise, I want to get over 30 wins. Individually, I want to be under three goals against and get over .900 for my save percentage. I was just under it last year so hopefully I can find a way to get over it this year.”

Over the summer, Hadfield bulked up in the gym and sharpened his skills on the ice with Above the Crease Goaltending. He also helped train goalies at summer camps with the Edmonton based goalie school.

“It helped me stay in the loop with the different styles of playing goal.”

Hadfield was happy to get back into the swing of things when training camp opened Monday at Performance Arena.

“It’s nice to see the guys again and get back on to the ice. I was excited all summer and now it’s here and I’m feeling pretty good.”

Right winger Taylor Fraser needs 40 games to surpass Giese and centre Reed Linaker has a great shot at breaking all of Williamson’s records.
